The plan highlights how Aberystwyth’s identity is closely linked to the sea and nearby rivers, including the Rheidol and the Ystwyth. It warns that pollution, including sewage spills and plastic waste, is putting these waters at risk. Climate change is also adding pressure to the marine environment.

Councillors said the motion aims to raise awareness about how everyday actions can affect the ocean. This includes inviting the Catchment Manager for Dŵr Cymru (Welsh Water) and the Environment Team Leader from Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to a public-facing council meeting. They will be asked to present specific 2025–2030 investment plans for the Rheidol and Ystwyth catchments. Also starting campaigns like “Stop the Block,” which encourages people not to pour fats and oils down drains. The goal is to prevent blockages that can lead to sewage overflows.

By adopting an amended Motion for the Ocean" Principles:Aberystwyth town council formally joins a national movement of over 40 councils, ensuring coastal health is a "material consideration" in all future planning and infrastructure decisions.

New developments may be asked to include better drainage systems to reduce strain on old sewer networks.

The Council will also write to Dŵr Cymru to demand the immediate rollout of high-frequency sensors and real-time discharge alerts for all Aberystwyth overflows via their River Health Portal.

Other actions include asking the Welsh Government for more funding and better water testing. The council also wants to improve public information, such as signs showing when water is safe for swimming. A progress report is expected within six months.
