Aberystwyth businessman Jack Edwards has launched a much-needed campaign to remove rubbish from the town’s beaches – while he also prepares to help bring clean water thousands of miles away to the people of remote villages in Kenya.
Edwards, who owns Aber Outdoors, a highly regarded kayaking hire and tour operator in Aber, is leading efforts to bring local pride back to the town’s beaches in a volunteer clean up operation every few weeks across north and south beach.
His small army of dedicated litter pickers, in collaboration with another local business My Friend’s Place coffee, collect bags of rubbish that would otherwise blight the local landscape, get pulled out to sea and add to the mountains of refuse in our oceans.
The campaign is just one part of Edwards’ volunteering endeavours, however. He is also leading a team to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Dig Deep, a charity that works to improve water access in Bomet County, Kenya.
There, two out of three people don’t have clean water, over half don’t have safe toilets and children don’t have access to basic hygiene education.
Edwards has experience climbing in Kenya, having climbed Mount Kilimanjaro twice before. He also has experience organising people, as manager of Aber’s much loved music and drinks venue Bank Vault.
To join a litter picking party with Jack and other conscientious locals head over to the Aber Outdoors Facebook page – and why not book a kayaking tour while you’re there.
