Grassroots coalition Palestine Solidarity Aberystwyth, part of a wider network of activist groups, is demanding immediate divestment from companies complicit in the genocide in Gaza. Backed by students, staff, and locals, they stress there’s no room for neutrality—only action.

Divestment is the strategic act of selling off assets, investments, or business holdings—often for ethical, political, or financial reasons

They’re exposing companies tied to weapons, surveillance, and injustice: BAE Systems, Barclays, Airbus, AXA, Alstom—names tied to death and displacement. It’s more than an investment—they call it blood money. The message is raw and unforgiving: “Not in our name,” they shout, unwilling to stand idle.

Their tactics are simple and searing. A petition launched in December 2023 has already amassed over 1,400 signatures, demanding the university sever these toxic ties. Demonstrations erupt outside the student union, silent vigils blanket Owain Glyndŵr Square, samba drums beat the march toward justice. They even livestream voices from Tulkarm refugee camps. They want divestment now, immediate and uncompromising—cut the contracts, end the complicity.

“Genocide” isn’t an abstraction. For these campaigners, it is the relentless bombing of Gaza’s universities, the deaths of scholars, the cries of displaced families: a systemic assault on Palestinian life. And while Aberystwyth’s leadership claims its investments are ethical, the protesters argue it’s a façade—pools of indirect funding still flow into the engines of violence.

This isn’t a campaign for tomorrow. It’s confronting a moral reckoning today. If institutions claim values, let them prove it. Stop funding the murder machine.
