Irish tall ship “MAYBE” from Arklow arrived in Aberystwyth early this morning after a successful journey across the Irish Sea. The vessel carried a group of teenage sailors taking part in a sail training programme organised by Sail Training Ireland for Youth Development.

The young crew spent several days at sea learning navigation, teamwork, and seamanship. Despite some seasickness overnight in rolling conditions, the group reported seeing dolphins, shooting stars, and glowing “photoluminescence” in the water, followed by a beautiful sunrise on arrival.

Aberystwyth Sea Cadets were among those who met the young sailors: “We had the pleasure of meeting the young persons aboard the tall ship from Arklow. We showed them around our boatpark and spoke about what we get up to in Sea Cadets.”
Joining the welcome were Aberystwyth Mayor Emlyn Jones, his deputy, and a small delegation from Cyngor Tref Aberystwyth. The visit is part of a town twinning partnership between Arklow and Aberystwyth, aimed at encouraging cultural exchange and youth development. After a day of exploring the town and meeting local groups, the crew will set sail once again, carrying new experiences and friendships with them.
While we still have your attention, Aberystwyth Sea Cadets will be holding an Open Day on 19th August from 10am to 4pm at the TA Centre, Park Avenue, where the public is invited to learn more about what cadets and volunteers do throughout the year. All are welcome.
